New Vega Series addresses non-standard voltage requirements with flexible output configurations.
LAMBDA INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S HIGHEST DENSITY 450W/650W MODULAR POWER SUPPLY
SAN DIEGO, CA (MAY 15, 2001) - Leading power supply manufacturer Lambda introduces its latest innovation, the Vega Series. Designed as a standard configurable product, the Vega utilizes off-the-shelf modules and converters that can be quickly assembled to meet custom output specifications, eliminating the need for high cost, long lead-time custom power supplies.
These configurable switch mode power supplies offer designers a higher level of reliability and flexibility for their power requirements than was previously available. High reliability was accomplished in two areas by lowering the overall component count and through the use of a single PCB design in both the front end converter and output module stages. This reduces the assembly time of the modules and converters by up to 70% over conventional modular products. Initially offered in two packages of 450W and 650W, Lambda can meet turnaround times of two weeks for evaluation units and six weeks for production volumes.
The modular design enables configurations to support typical applications from computer peripherals, to automated test systems, and industrial equipment, where 1.8V, 3.3V, 5.0V, 12V and 24V multiple output combinations are typically used.
"Developed by a combined team of engineers from the UK, the US and Japan, the Vega is an example of Lambda's global design capability. Utilizing a global team of engineers enabled Lambda to quickly address new trends in the market such as high current, low-voltage system architectures in just 12 months from conception to production. The goal was to produce a compact, powerful power supply that resulted in Vega's superior density of 5.8W/in3 for the system air package," said Dorrel Vernon, Lambda product manager. "With the Vega Series' versatility, we can address thousands of multiple output configurations without the incurred NRE cost and long development time typically encountered with custom designs."
The Vega Series provides a seamless output voltage range from 1.8V to 31V, with higher voltages possible by series operation. "This makes the Vega the most configurable power supply available," added Vernon. The 450W and 650W packages provide a maximum of 10 outputs with no minimum load requirements and offer overvoltage and over current protection as standard features.
Ensuring worldwide compatibility, Vega is compliant to EN61000-3-2 power factor correction standards, IEC1000-4 input transient immunity standards and meets EMI level B conducted, and level A radiated standards. The series also has CE Marking, UL 1950, CSA234 and EN60950 worldwide safety agency approvals.
Options of the 450W and 650W Vega Series units include fast on-tab/screw input or output connectors, IEC input connectors and multiple cooling options including system air, end fan and end fan with reverse airflow. Standard signal options include mains fail, global inhibit, output good and output inhibit.
The Vega Series is positioned competitively with pricing averaging $0.80/W when purchased in OEM quantities.
